About us
At Bactobio, our mission is to create a safer and greener world by harvesting valuable metabolites from previously uncultured microbes—an untapped domain of immense potential. Our work focuses on discovering new chemicals with global impact in healthcare, agriculture, and industry.
To enable this, we're constantly developing our platform, which stretches from microbial generation to compound discovery. We use data—bioinformatics and data-driven modelling—to guide exploration at all stages of our pipeline and to evolve our pipeline over time.
Key to this endeavour is our software infrastructure which includes a custom-made application ecosystem that our lab scientists use to capture, store, contextualize, and explore experimental designs, data, and metadata. This ecosystem interfaces with our pipeline-spanning relational database, as well as our lab automation hardware to accelerate experimentation and ensure that we generate the quantity and quality of data necessary for our learning efforts.
Role
We're looking for a senior-level software engineer to provide leadership and technical expertise across our entire software infrastructure, as well as manage a 3-5 person team of core software developers. You should care deeply about helping to shape software culture and a company-wide software vision while still having that burning desire to contribute code. We're especially interested in someone looking to embrace opportunities for increased responsibility and rapid professional development afforded by a fast-paced and growing startup company.
Our current stack
-
OCI-hosted MySQL database and compute servers
-
Python back end for data persistence and domain logic
-
Python-based web front end (Flask)
Responsibilities:
-
Manage our core software team which includes long-term road mapping, short-term sprint planning, resource allocation, and line management
-
Liaise directly with senior company management in order to understand and contextualize high-level motives for the software team
-
Communicate team progress and vision with non-software stakeholders, especially wet-lab scientists.
-
Support and guide the professional development of team members
-
Provide full-stack architectural leadership
-
Help guide implementations of domain-driven design principles and inversion-of-control patterns
-
Help guide database design and implementation and ensure that it is fit for complex and fast-evolving experimental pipelines
-
Contribute to our backend codebase and be willing to jump into front-end development when team members need a helping hand
-
Oversee the development, deployment, and maintenance of our application ecosystem.
-
Oversee our usage of cloud computing services
-
Ensure and educate on codebase quality
Team
Our software team currently consists of three dedicated developers who focus full-time on designing tools for lab scientists and the growth of the MySQL database. This team is supported by eight full-time bioinformaticians, data scientists and automation engineers who contribute to our stack daily and share overlapping responsibilities. Together we have built the framework of our code base and the structure for our database. We care deeply about cultivating a code base that is a joy to collaborate in, and we strive for good practices with sensible implementations: git version control, unit and integration tests, code review, and communication of design decisions. As a team, we strive to understand the needs of departments across the company and aim to develop bespoke solutions that improve everyone’s day-to-day work. The applications that we have built are used daily throughout the company and have improved sample tracking, data collection processes, data analysis pipelines and lab automation.
At Bactobio, we're a diverse, growing team bringing together many expertise, and we're all still very much learning.
