About us
At Bactobio, our mission is to create a safer and greener world by harvesting valuable metabolites from previously uncultured microbes—an untapped domain of immense potential. Our work focuses on discovering new chemicals with global impact in healthcare, agriculture, and industry.
To enable this, we use data—bioinformatics and data-driven modelling—to guide exploration at all stages of our pipeline, and to evolve our platform over time.
Role
We're looking for a data science PhD student interested in exploring life at a biotechnology start-up. This is a fully immersed, on-site placement at our office and labs in London.
The focus of this internship will be on learning how to better understand and control the communal growth of microbes. You'll work with DNA sequencing data and help to inform experimental design.
The work will provide exposure to machine learning and prediction modelling, bioinformatics, statistics, software development as part of a software engineering team, and close collaboration with wet lab scientists. Expertise and experience in any of these areas is a plus, but interest in all is a must!
Please let us know about your expertise in these domains, as well as with specific software and computational technologies.
Team
We're a tight-knit, highly-collaborative team of about forty people. We sit and work together and take an interest in each other's work. In addition to computational scientists, you can expect to collaborate daily with software developers and wet lab scientists and to have exposure to our business journey.
Finally, our computational scientists contribute to the same code base as the rest of our software developers. We all care deeply about cultivating a code base that is a joy to collaborate in, and we strive for good practices with sensible implementations: git version control, unit and integration tests, code review, and communication of design decisions. If you haven't had exposure to working in this type of environment, it's a great professional experience to walk away with.
Our previous interns come from a range of programmes, including PIPS, iCASE, and MRC LID. Read about one of our most recent interns’ experience here.
