Mass Spectrometry Data Scientist

Compound Discovery

We are looking for a Mass Spectrometry Data Scientist (Senior Scientist or Science Lead) to help us identify novel compounds with commercial value potential from our microbial isolates.

Role

In this role, you will work across our compound discovery and data science teams to support pipelines for the characterisation of novel bioactive metabolites.

Team

Our compound discovery team consists of analytical chemists and microbiologists who work closely with bioinformaticians and data scientists to collect the highest quality data for analysis. Together, we have built a database and bioinformatics pipeline that have informed our experiments to culture over 2,200 previously unexplored microbial species. Our compound discovery team work on characterising the novel compounds these microbes produce using liquid handling robotics, design of experiment procedures and fermentation techniques.

Responsibilities:  

  • Optimisation, development and maintenance of workflows for processing LCMS data

  • Collaboration with scientists across the company to build bespoke processing methodologies

  • Improving pipelines for automation of sample dereplication and compound identification

  • Coordination with software team to manage data capture, storage and processing for team

  • Application of the latest research method to ensure efficient and effective workflows

Skills and experience:

  • An analytical background with a PhD in chemistry / chemoinformatics / computational chemistry or MSc and equivalent experience 5+ years’ of relevant industry experience

  • Extensive experience with LCMS data processing, including tools such as MZmine, XCMS, MassHunter and Sirius

  • 3+ years experience with data analysis in Python (preferred) or R

  • Data-driven mindset and demonstrated ability working with large datasets

  • Collaborative drive with an ability to learn and adapt

 

It would be great if you had:

  • Practical experience preparing and running LCMS samples

  • Experience with the identification and characterisation of natural products, including molecular networking analyses

  • Developed and/or maintained LCMS databases

  • Experience with relational databases (MySQL preferred)

  • Experience with modern software development practices, including version control (GitHub) and continuous integration

  • Experience with cloud computing

Facilities

Bactobio has over 300 sqm of laboratory space with high-end equipment spanning microbiology through to analytical chemistry. Within compound discovery, this includes a dedicated analytical chemistry suite with multiple mass spectrometers, HPLCs and high-throughput plate readers, as well as an automation suite with bioreactors, a flow cytometer and liquid handling machines.
